The EM 1 Test Handler Emulator*
What is a Test Handler Emulator?
A Test Handler Emulator is a low cost, easy to
use, automated test handler that accurately
emulates the functioning and test site of much
more complex, and expensive, fully automated
production test handlers.
Like a “normal” production type test handler, the
EM 1 consists of a base system that can be
reconfigured to handle many package types
through the use of a package conversion kit.
But unlike other test handlers, the EM 1 has an
important additional, patented, feature called an
EM Kit. The EM Kit reconfigures the base system
so it emulates the pitch and geometry of a
particular type of test handler.
The EM 1 is the first ever test handler emulator. It is specifically developed to be used at semiconductor design centers to allow engineers to develop test programs and debug test hardware, such as contactors and load boards, using an inexpensive tool while maintaining compatibility with production systems that are used in manufacturing locations worldwide. With the EM 1, users can debug test processes using the same load board (or DIB), contactor, tester to handler docking hardware, and in many cases even conversion kit parts such as alignment plates and work presses (or nests), as are used in their production machines.
The emulator gives engineers an alternative to either manually testing/debugging new test processes or using expensive test-handling systems that could be better utilized in a production environment.
By reducing the time it takes to debug test programs and related hardware, semiconductor companies can reduce time to market for new designs.
And by exactly emulating the test hardware of the production machines, designers and test engineers can develop high quality, robust test processes the first time around, resulting in maximum yields at final test.
In spite of its small size, the EM 1 is a full featured, tri-temperature, pick-and-place test handler. In addition to its practical use in design centers, it is also ideally suited to many “traditional” test-handling applications, such as low volume, small lot, or long test time requirements.
